Have you ever met a person that seems to effortlessly paint the world in a perception you never thought possible? I met such a person a while ago. The first time was in passing. It was almost as if I was invading their territory. Kind of a wolf pack mentality sort of invasion. ‘Don’t mind me. Just a wolf passing through. I am not a threat.’ But after the second, third, and forth happenstance meeting. We got to sit down and start talking. And of course I ended up making a jack-ass of myself, as I usually do. Yet, this person was kind and forgiving. An Alpha. Dominant, and at the same time, submissive, and empathic. I was just a lone Omega, a disperser as they say. For this person had a sense of humor that took me aback. Possessing a knowledge of living life, far more stable than my perceptions of it. A confidence and straightforward nature of ‘being true to one’s self’ that you really don’t see a lot of. And what’s more? A painter!
Cut to 8 or so years later. She is considered family to me. A sister in confidence and life experiences. A comrade in the trenches of the art world. And to put a dork spin on it, a superhero I am in awe of.
Karen Hilliard is the kind of artist I aspire to be. Her creativity, imagination, and style makes her absolutely unique in every way. Each piece of art that she brings to life, not only tells a story. But each story has hidden secrets embedded within them. The kinds of discovery that you can only witness after standing in front of the art piece and really absorbing it. Things start to happen. Shapes start to take form. A melody of mischief begins to play around, right in front of your eyes.
Her skill spans across a multitude of mediums. But her bread and butter is with watercolor. And her subject focus, all of nature.
She has a way of capturing the micro details that even photography blurs into obscurity. Capturing moments and viewpoints in her work that, by my own perceptions, most everybody misses. Each creation bled in color from her hand, guided by her sight and feeling, is an overture of magical imagery. A painted letter to the very heart of this world. A secret love affair with nature itself.
Her art just takes my breath away.
