Greece Underground

Being the core staging ground of democracy and philosophy, Greece has always had the brightest street art on the planet. Which some could argue, began the whole genre. And of course I am spooning a reference to a movie here (in a round about sort of way). The word graffiti coming from the root word “graphi” which means, ‘to write’. So, there you go.

Today, many shop/business owners go out of their way to ask local street artists to paint their buildings. In quite a few cities across the nation, this practice is a well sought after opportunity. Unlike the rest of the cities around the world needing permits and the like, it is frowned upon and gets messy for the really talented individuals. Pushing their limits and creativity. You know, because graffiti is illegal.

But Greece, is only so big. Being a sort of contemporary art hub of the world, there is only so much a street artist can do since the place has been around since the Stone Age. So, there have been a lot of artists making their marks, so to speak, up to this point. The political struggles alone, even the most resent, have spurred an artistic intensity few other countries have witnessed.

Even though you might be claiming that the big “graffiti movement” started out in the place we call New York back in the early 90’s. It didn’t really. New York does what New York does best. It megaphones it’s trend culture for the world to hear. Making whatever it is, popular and “self proclaimed”. Not to say that the movement started in another place mind you. Just think for a second about what an “art movement” truly is. Is it a band wagon that people are jumping onto? In hopes to make a name for themselves? Or is it something more profound that is sparking the passions in select individuals; that are voicing their opinion to the world, without following the crowd of posers making a big pop culture wave? Maybe that’s the whole bases of ‘an art movement. Opinions vary.

I just thought of something (relating to the last logbook post). You know what Greece didn’t come up with? The dildo. You can thank the Romans in Great Britain for making that one a trend. Let alone the fact that it is suspected that Germany holds the founding flag of the first dildo that dates back to the Ice Age. Though you have to give credit to America (namely George Taylor) for coming up with a steam powered crotch hammer back in the late 1800’s.

How bout them bananas?
